Flickr unbanned in UAE

A ban on popular photo-sharing web site Flickr was lifted in the UAE yesterday after the site's owner Yahoo! reached an agreement with the UAE Telecommunication and Regulatory Authority (TRA).

People in the UAE can now access the site on both du and Etisalat networks by visiting www.flickr.com.Flickr
Flickr is a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs in blogs and social media. It is also said to have close to 5 billion images as of September 2010.
The TRA release the following statement: "The block, which was applied on 'Flickr' web site has been removed, however a partial block will remain active on some sections that provide improper content that contradicts with the UAE society values and tradition."
"(Flickr) was previously blocked by the TRA as it included some images, which oppose the values and culture of the society," the statement concluded.
Yahoo Middle East executive Ahmed Nassef calls it a positive development. He says in a statement on the company's regional website that Yahoo is working with authorities to unblock a feature known as Flickr Groups that's still off-limits.
